Shouldn’t have: A 16-year-old girl who had taken her grandmother’s car without permission was taken to the county’s juvenile detention center on pending charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle without a driver’s license Saturday. The grandmother is currently in a nursing home and the girl had stayed at her house in Steubenville with other family members, but when the others woke up Saturday they said she and the car were gone. The car was found crashed into an embankment just south of the Jones Road-county Road 2 intersection in Rayland. Deputies said the engine was still warm but no one was in sight but they eventually located her at a Wintersville residence. She told them she’d let a friend drive the car and he’d crashed it. The teen was already on juvenile probation and told deputies she “was scared and didn’t know what to do.”

Robbed: Johnson’s White Bear Inn on state Route 43 was burglarized, Sunday. An alarm had sounded and when deputies investigated, they found the kitchen door and another leading to the inside freezer unlocked, but no obvious signs of an intruder. Their movements triggered a second alarm, prompting the owner to investigate. He located a package of ground meat on the ground, still frozen, next to his outside freezer. He said the freezer was still locked so he checked the lockbox on the wall and realized someone had tried to pry it open. Surveillance footage showed the thief running through the kitchen into the bar, grabbing the kitchen staff’s tip money, about $600 in money bags, a case of baby back ribs valued at more than $500 and a case of hamburger buns valued at $60.

Burned up: A Cross Creek township resident reported a male burning things on her property, Saturday. Deputies said he fled before they arrived, but the woman told them the man “came from a lower apartment and began burning a female’s belongings.” She went to check on the woman but found out she’d left earlier in the evening. Wintersville firefighters extinguished the fire.

Doesn’t add up: A Smithfield woman told deputies she’d fallen asleep in the passenger seat on the way back from a trip to the store and awoke to find her live-in boyfriend dragging her across the pavement until she could get up for herself, Friday. Deputies said she had no apparent injuries. Her boyfriend told them she’s addicted to prescription pills and must have taken too many, because she passed out on the way home. He said he couldn’t wake her up so he tried to help her out of the vehicle and get her into the house. He said when she got up and walked into their house, he walked across the street to his store to avoid any further problems with her.

Bad place: A disabled vehicle on the Logan Avenue on-ramp to state Route 7 south in Mingo Junction was impeding traffic, and when deputies investigated, they discovered marijuana residue and “a strong odor of marijuana” in the vehicle, Saturday. Several hours earlier the owner had advised Mingo Junction firefighters she was waiting on AAA, but when deputies got there no one was in sight so they confiscated the marijuana and called a tow truck themselves. The woman who was driving showed up with a friend and told them it had stalled and she couldn’t get it to start again. The vehicle was towed to the owner’s address.

Out of it: A Toronto woman reported a possible overdose in her neighbor’s driveway, Thursday. When they arrived, deputies said the man had been revived, though he “appeared impaired, was jittery and (his vehicle had) all the airbags deployed.” He told deputies he thought a car ran him off the road and caused him to crash. He kept reaching into his pockets, so deputies asked him if they could check him for weapons. They said he agreed, “then reached into his pocket and dropped a crack pipe on the ground.” A used hypodermic also was located in his pocket. He was transported to Trinity.

Fishy: A Bloomingdale woman told deputies she thinks a neighbor tried to break into her car, Sunday. She said the bottom of the driver’s door was bent out and the top of the door “appears to be misaligned with the rest of the vehicle.” The woman said she’s the only one who drivers the car and she doesn’t know how it happened. Deputies said when they examined it, the door was bent out about an inch but there were no scratches along the edge or the inside door frame and that it appeared to have been damaged “from backing up with the door open, or opening the door and getting it wedged on something.”

Unhappy mother: A Steubenville woman reported her adult son is mistreating her, Sunday. She said her son, who is her caretaker, has been leaving her alone, comes home intoxicated, yells at her and disrespects her. He’d left her alone for the evening so deputies picked up her other son and brought him to the residence to be with her. They also located and spoke with the younger son.

Entered: Someone appeared to have ransacked the cab of a semi parked at Mitchell Trucking, Monday. Deputies said the door was open and the dome light on, but no one was around it. About 30 minutes earlier when the deputy had passed through the area he said nothing was amiss.

Cited: Christopher A. Nemeth, 34, 956 Donegal Drive E, Follansbee, speeding, U.S. Route 22 east near Lovers Lane.

Light-fingered: A business owner at the Fort Steuben Mall told police someone stole a commercial coffee maker, a griddle, a deep fryer and plumbing parts from his store, Sunday. He said the items were taken within the previous four days.

Noise makers: A caller reported hearing shots fired in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue, Sunday. Police spotted several people on a porch who told them “someone set off fireworks in front of the store, and when police reviewed surveillance footage realized it was one of them. Marquis McClung, 30, 1428 Maryland, told police he did it and was cited for discharge of fireworks.

On video: A Market Street resident told police someone entered her car and poured coffee over the inside, Sunday. She gave police a video of a man she knows pulling up in his silver car, getting out and getting in her car.

Shoplifter: A white man wearing a red flannel shirt loaded a plastic bag with merchandise and fled without paying Sunday, Walgreens employees said. The inventory isn’t complete, but they said they know he had a bottle of vitamins and a Gillette razor in the bag.

Down: A man was lying in a parking lot in the 700 block of Adams Street with a head injury, Sunday. He said he was walking through the lot when he lost his balance.

Waylaid: A man walking in the 400 block of North Sixth Street with a friend said a third man robbed him, Monday. He said they saw the man walking toward them so they walked away but he followed them. He said the man threw him into a fence, then stole a bag containing two cell phones, $60 and a bluetooth speaker. The victim was able to identify his assailant, but he told police he’d left his apartment hours before and had been visiting a friend. Several hours later the victim’s brother allegedly hurled a rock through the alleged assailant’s window.

Creepy: Callers complained of someone walking around houses in the 1400 block of Belleview Boulevard with flashlights, Sunday. Police checked the area but couldn’t find the individuals.

Arrested: Joshua L. Hoit, 41, 338 Susquehanna Road, Wellsburg, domestic battery, obstructing an officer and bond violation, Friday.
